Marlies’ 33rd Birthday

February 25, 2008

It was a funny Wen evening. She invited us to Siebensternbräu. I see some of her friends only once a year… at her b-day… I used to go to Siebensternbräu as I was still living in Neubau. They serve a delicious veg bread. :)

I left quite early as I had to pack… for Beeeerlin… (ok, I posted this later…)

Next entry will be the trip to Bukarest! I am very much looking forward to seeing my childhood friend Brenda and her 2 kids, whom I met as new born… 11 years ago!!! It reminds me somehow of Dumas’ Book “After 20 Years” … :)

Pergamon Altar

February 19, 2008

Berlin, Pergamon Museum 16th of Feb 2008

“The Pergamon Altar is a magnificently opulent structure originally built in the 2nd century BC in the Ancient Greek city of Pergamon (modern day Bergama in Turkey) in north-western Anatolia, 25.74 kilometers from the Aegean Sea. It has long been assumed that the temple was dedicated to Zeus. The only lengthy reference to it in Antiquity is in the Liber Memorialis of Ampelius (8.14), where it is described as “a large marble altar, forty feet high with a great many sculptures, among which a Battle of the Giants.” The Altar has a 113 m long sculptural frieze depicting the gigantomachy, or struggle of the gods and the giants. “the frieze is composed of a sequence of isolated, tightly-knit and self-contained groups and figures” each unit assigned to one workshop. Many inscriptions on the lower moulded margin identify the sculptor responsible and his city. “

The PA was for sure one of the most wonderful things I have seen in the past months… No idea how many, but many! I can not remember how long I stared at it and when I was able to move, but who cares! I was sitting on Pergamon’s stairs and I was admiring the giants… Little else mattered… funnily :)

“Neferneferuaten, c. 1370 BC – c. 1330 BC was the wife of  Akhenaten. She was the mother-in-law and probable stepmother of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun“…

The only thing I can tell about her, is that she is perfect and very old… over 3000years!

The Beauty of Babylon

February 18, 2008

Pergamon Museum (Museumsinsel) Berlin, 16th of Feb 2008

The Dedicatory Inscription on the Ishtar Gate reads:

“Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, the faithful prince appointed by the will of Marduk, the highest of princely princes, beloved of Nabu, of prudent counsel, who has learned to embrace wisdom, who fathomed their divine being and reveres their majesty, the untiring governor, who always takes to heart the care of the cult of Esagila and Ezida and is constantly concerned with the well-being of Babylon and Borsippa, the wise, the humble, the caretaker of Esagila and Ezida, the firstborn son of Nabopolassar, the King of Babylon. “

There are no words to properly describe Ishtar’s Gate… one has to see it… and bend before it’s beauty. I was so happy to be able to stand in front of it!
